【音樂】想起Laura，就想起Christopher Cross
這麼多年，從來沒有找到第二個相似的聲音，音樂歷史上可能不會再有第二個Christopher Cross了。說難聽一點，他的外貌就像路邊隨時可見的電腦工程師、宅男，但是當他的聲音一從麥克風流洩而出，真讓人有到了天堂的感覺。
輕輕柔柔的，Cross親自詮釋了音樂該是什麼──純粹用聲音征服聽眾，而不是外表，不是舞蹈，也不是MV。每次聽他的歌，在那三五分鐘內總會有暫時到了另一個世界的感受，和看電影逃避世俗的感覺很像。
最早接觸Cross的歌，應該是Arthur’s Theme，這首歌是電影Arthur的主題曲，然後是Think of Laura，很喜歡這首歌背後的故事。至於專輯，第一張應該是1988年的Back of My Mind，然後才去追他以前的專輯。
Think of Laura被收錄在1983年Christopher Cross第二張專輯Another Page，此曲也繼Never Be the Same和Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)之後，成為Cross連續第三首攻上成人榜冠軍的單曲。
這首歌在ABC被拿來在肥皂劇General Hospital播放（女主角名叫Laura）之後聲名大噪，不過Cross強調這首歌並不是為電視而作的，而是作為紀念Denison大學同學Laura Carter。Carter的父母從賓州前來探望女兒，在看完Laura的草地曲棍球賽之後，正準備駕車離開，Laura坐在車後座，卻遭不知哪來的流彈打死。
Cross是透過當時的女友Paige認識Carter，這首歌就用來作為舒緩Paige情緒和追念Laura的管道。Paige的照片也出現在「Another Page（有雙關語之意？）」的唱片封面上。
整首歌最動人之處大概是這一句：「當你想起Laura，請微笑，不要哭，因為那是她想要的方式（When you think of Laura, laugh, don’t cry / I know she’d want it that way）」。
回到Cross，他於1951年出生於德州聖安東尼奧。1979年推出同名處女專輯，在1981年的葛萊美獎大放異采，成為史上同時包辦年度最佳專輯、年度最佳歌曲、年度最佳唱門和年度最佳新人四項主要獎項的第一人，當年也以Arthur’s Theme拿到奧斯卡獎最佳原著歌曲，風光得不得了。
他的All Right，曾經在1983年被選為NCAA男籃錦標賽的主題曲。不過MTV在1984年的崛起，就宣告了外型和歌路都在新世代不討喜的Cross生涯將走下坡，從此就沒有好成績。最近一查，才知道他至今都還發行專輯。
對他印象最深刻的另一點，倒是前幾張專輯封面都會出現的火鶴，原因不明，或許是他特別喜歡這種動物。歌手總是會在封面上顯露一些特別的喜好，例如Boston的太空船、Iron Maiden的骷髏頭。
留在大家記憶中的，或許只能、也只會是1981–1983年的Christopher Cross吧，藝界人生終究是如此殘酷。
